Community Event Videography for Cityside Journalism’s Black Political Power Tour in Oakland

Cityside Journalism needed video coverage for the Black Political Power Tour in Oakland, a community-centered event hosted at Oakstop. The program included speeches, panel discussions, audience engagement, and conversations focused on civic participation, political power, and community voice.

For journalism organizations, nonprofit media groups, civic organizations, universities, public policy groups, and community event organizers, this type of event video has to do more than document who was in the room. It needs to preserve the message, capture the audience's energy, and create video assets that can be used after the event for reporting, outreach, archiving, social media, and future programming.

The challenge was to cover a live community event with multiple moving parts. Speaker moments, panel discussions, audience reactions, room energy, and informal interactions all needed attention. The production had to stay organized while remaining respectful of the event’s purpose and without distracting from the conversations taking place.

Bidar Video approached the project with a multi-camera event videography setup designed for both documentation and storytelling. We captured the main speeches and panel discussions with clean, stable coverage while also filming cinematic b-roll of the venue, audience, speakers, details, and community moments throughout the event.

The panel discussion coverage was especially important. A strong panel video needs clear framing of the moderator and speakers, clean audio, audience context, and enough camera variety to keep the final recording watchable. We filmed the panels, so Cityside Journalism could receive separate panel videos in addition to the overall event highlight.

The b-roll coverage helped give the final video a stronger sense of place and atmosphere. Instead of only recording the stage, we captured the room, attendee interactions, speaker preparation, audience engagement, signage, and moments that conveyed the event's energy at Oakstop.

The final deliverables included separate video coverage of the panel discussions and a two-minute event highlight video. These assets provided Cityside Journalism with content to support post-event sharing, community engagement, website updates, social media, reporting, and future event promotion.

This project shows how professional event videography can help journalism organizations, nonprofits, and civic groups turn a live public program into lasting video content that continues to serve the organization long after the event.
